MEDIA RELEASE

PERTH TO TAKE PART IN GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

SAT 24TH SEPT
1-2PM

MOVING PLANET MOVING SPEAKOUT
Commencing 240 St George's Terrace, city

"People around the world are taking part in "Moving Planet", a day of grassroots actions to show we're ready to move away from fossil fuels, and it's important that Perth takes part," said event spokesperson Kamala Emanuel.

"As Arctic Sea ice reaches its lowest recorded volume in thousands of years, humanity stands on the edge of the precipice of climate catastrophe and must pull back," Emanuel said.

"Instead, the WA government encourages the expansion of coal, oil and gas projects in this state and is putting out the welcome mat to "fracking". And the federal government, too, hails the growth of the fossil fuel industry," Emanuel said.

"The Moving Planet Moving Speakout will give people in Perth the chance to join the call for

•    100% renewable energy by 2020
•    no gas hub in the Kimberley
•    no fracking in WA
•    phasing out coal, oil and gas," she said.

"We can prevent runaway climate change, but only if we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the air by cutting emissions to zero and soaking up the excess through reafforestation and other measures. It's feasible and affordable for us to meet our energy needs with renewables, to allow us to phase out fossil fuel use. As world citizens, our responsibility starts here and we're telling state and federal government and industry: it's time to move away from fossil fuels and build an energy sector based 100% on renewable sources," Emanuel said.

ENDS.
