Successful climate rally
500 people attended the climate rally in Perth on June 13. Organisers were pleased with the turn-out and will continue organising future events. The next meeting on of the Safe Climate Coalition on July 4 is to plan the next steps in this campaign.
The West Australian reported that: "Several hundred people turned out to support a climate rally in Perth today as part of a national call to embrace renewable energy and scrap the Federal Government’s emissions trading scheme...
"Today’s colourful lunchtime rally in Forrest Chase included information stalls, music and banners, along with passionate speeches from WA Greens senator Rachel Siewert and Greens MP for Fremantle Adele Carles, along with The Wilderness Society WA’s Peter Robertson [actually Jessica Chapman!] and the Anti-Nuclear Alliance of WA’s Kate Vallentine..."
The paper quoted Greens Senator Rachel Siewert as saying "The science is absolutely clear – if we are to have any hope of preventing runaway climate change and the chaos that will bring, we need to bring global emissions down rapidly and begin removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere."
And they quoted rally organiser Kamala Emanuel as saying: "We recognise that there’s an emergency on climate change and we really don’t believe that the government is taking this seriously" and that "We need to build a political movement that can bridge the gap…to get the people making decisions for the interests of the future so we can protect all people, all generations, all species and win back a safe climate."
