Safe Climate Newsletter

3 September 2009

Dear friends and supporters,

Welcome to the first newsletter from the Coalition for a Safe Climate. We plan to send you our updates more regularly (fortnightly for now) and hope you enjoy this issue. We'll be including information about what we've been doing, events we'd love you to come to, climate news and some links for strengthening our networks. Please feel free to send us your feedback and ideas, and any links or news you'd like to see in the next issue to info@safeclimate.org.au.

Coming Events

Saturday 5 September, 2pm (then fortnightly)

Coalition for a Safe Climate meeting. Campaign planning meeting, with a focus on the state government's plans to expand the coal-fired power industry in WA, and the <350 action October 24. Your ideas and enthusiasm welcome!

Saturday October 24, 12 noon

<350 action, State Parliament House. Take part in an international day of action sending the Copenhagen negotiators the message that we need strong action for a safe climate. Carbon dioxide levels, now sitting around 390ppm (parts per million) need to be reduced - to below 350, if we are to stabilise the Earth's climate systems.  http://www.350.org/node/6865

Thursday December 17 - Sunday December 20

Camp for Climate Action. Workshops and direct action designed to stop coal-mining and its use for energy in Collie, the coal capital of WA. http://climatecampwa.wordpress.com/

SafeClimate in Action

The Coalition for a Safe Climate held a successful Billionaires for Coal satirical protest action against the government's emissions trading scheme. The action was held on August 11, two days before the scheme was voted down in the senate. It was a light-hearted but effective way of drawing attention to the real (corporate) winners out of the proposed scheme, and to call for real action to halt dangerous climate change.

The Safe Climate Coalition played a role in supporting the Perth premiere of the Age of Stupid on August 19.

The film, by director Franny Armstrong (McLibel), stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, looking at old footage from 2008 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?

It was shown at Hoyts cinemas for a week and will be shown in other cinemas and at more indy events after that. Safe Climate will definitely organise our own screening in the future - stay tuned for more details.

Pictured are some of the people who enjoyed the Perth screening on August 19, and welcome to those of you who joined our contact list after the film.

The national climate action summit held in Canberra at the beginning of the year adopted a range of policies and projects for national collaboration. One project was to develop a structure for a national grassroots climate change activist network. The network working group has produced a proposal for the National Community Climate Network that is ready to be voted on. In WA, the Hills Climate Action Group has voted to endorse the network; Coalition for a Safe Climate will be voting this Saturday. If you're involved in a Climate Action Group and would like a copy of the proposal, phone Kamala on 0417 319662 or email info@safeclimate.org.au and we'll get it out to you.
