Community Survey on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day, Saturday June 5, Safe Climate Perth activists spent a few hours in Northbridge with a stall focussed on the 100% renewables campaign.

We used a survey developed by the national 100% renewables campaign
, which proved an effective way to engage people in discussion and develop our understanding of community attitudes.

We will be collating and presenting the results when we have a larger sample. Our initial results indicate that community members surveyed overwhelmingly think
  • the Australian government is not doing enough to promote renewable energy;
  • creating clean energy jobs should be a priority for the Australian government;
  • taxpayer money should go to developing renewable energy, not subsidising fossil fuels;
  • Australia should develop a plan to move to 100% renewable energy; and
  • WA should meet energy needs by renewable energy and efficiency, not expanding coal-fired power production.
A lot of people had questions about the feasibility of developing a plan for 100% renewable energy - even while thinking we should do it - and we were able to let people know about the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 plan being developed by Beyond Zero Emissions and others to show how it can be done.
