Safe Climate Newsletter

29th July, 2010

Dear friends and supporters,

The same week that Beyond Zero Emissions and the Melbourne University Energy Institute launched their blueprint for Australia to get 100% of our stationary energy from renewables by 2020, WA's premier and environment minister announced approval for WA to construct three new coal-fired power plants, and bring two old ones back into use.

It's clear there are solutions to the climate crisis; it is not technical feasibility but political will that is missing, not only at the state, but also at the federal level.

Around Australia, Walk Against Warming will be held the week before the federal election, on Sunday August 15, to put the pressure on our political leaders to:

  • Make the polluters pay by putting a price on carbon
  • Replace our most polluting power stations with clean energy
  • Create new clean jobs and industries
  • Guarantee to cut pollution over the next term of government
  • Support poor and vulnerable countries to tackle the impacts of climate change and invest in sustainable development.

The Walk will give people from around WA the chance to show our support for renewable energy, not the planned expansion of coal. It will be held at the Fremantle Esplanade, at midday, Sunday August 15th. Safe Climate Perth will be organising a contingent to take part, and we'd like to ask you to join the Walk and let your friends know about it. Together, let's make it impossible for those who say they lead us to take us down the climate nightmare dead end
