Community opposition to coal mining at Margaret River
Margaret River is a town about 5 hours south of Perth. It has thriving
tourism and agriculture industries, and impressive natural beauty. It is
also a world renowned surfing spot.
The mining company LD Operations plans to set up a new coal mine right next to Margaret River. The Margaret River community only found out about this when they saw something about it on TV. They are furious and getting really organised really quickly. To give an idea of the momentum of this campaign at the moment, they had a big public meeting with one day's notice, that attracted 60 people.
The main line that the mining company is using is that the mine will create 200 jobs. The mining company's plan is to export the coal to India (as if India needs more pollution).

The community will be holding a benefit auction on August 14 and street march through the town of Margaret River for Walk Against Warming on August 15.
