All out for Walk Against Warming!
Safe Climate Newsletter
7th August, 2010
As the environment of Southwest WA comes under further attack, members of the community prepare to fight back against a proposed new coal mine near Margaret River.
In the political sphere, Julia Gillard has announced a policy for more talk, less action on climate change. The Greens have made significant public transport policy announcements, leaving the ALP playing catch-up, and Vote Climate has launched its detailed analysis of climate policies in the election, giving the thumbs up to Socialist Alliance and encouragement to Greens and Democrats.
Beyond writing letters to the newspapers (which is worth a go), an important way for concerned members of the community to have our say about climate change in the lead-up to the federal election is to participate in the Walk Against Warming on August 15. Though the major parties seem keen to ignore the issue, when they're not offering platitudes or half-measures, we can come together to build an independent movement that can't be ignored, no matter who gets in - and to try to make sure that the candidates most sympathetic to acting for a safe climate poll well.
With this edition of our newsletter, we'd like to encourage you again to come to the Walk - midday, Sunday 15th August at the Fremantle Esplanade - and help get the word out about the Walk. Please forward this newsletter, pick up leaflets or posters from the Conservation Council or at our next Safe Climate meeting. Volunteer to come leafletting with us, or take it on yourself or with a friend (train stations, shopping centres and TAFE/university campuses).

Facing Climate Change
The world is trying to reduce carbon emissions in the economy by 80% before 2050. How do businesses, households, schools, government departments and universities develop the necessary carbon auditing and analysis skills to participate in this process? What are the emerging legal requirements to do this? How are the UNFCCC negotiations attempting to create a global treaty? What are the technological, town planning, building and lifestyle options to decarbonise our settlements and regions?
