While sustainable energy groups are developing plans for Australia to shift to renewable sources for power, and away from burning coal, the Barnett government has approved 5 projects to expand coal-fired power production in WA.

This will will contribute towards a 75% increase in WA’s greenhouse pollution according to the Environment Protection Authority. It will also have a damaging impact on air quality, water supplies and health for the communities of Collie and Eneabba close to the plants.

Combined with the proposal to mine coal at Margaret River, for export, it's clear the state government isn't taking seriously the need to cut our greenhouse gas emissions.

At the federal level, it's still not clear who will form government. Labor and Coalition have shown their support for the fossil fuel lobby. But it's clear there's substantial support in the community for something other than politics as usual - and that's got to be good for campaigning for real action on climate change.

There's potential now to create a grassroots community campaign to replace coal with renewables. The first step must be to stop the expansion of coal. People have already made donations, sent postcards, and signed petitions. We’ve made a start, but we need to do more.

Help us plan the next steps and get involved in building a stronger, more organised, united and vocal community campaign that can win.
