Punting on coal is a loser, but try telling the Government
By David Spratt September 10, 2009
THERE'S an irony in the rushed construction of a new security fence around the Hazelwood power station, in anticipation of a community protest this weekend.
The Government, it seems, is more in interested in protecting Hazelwood from protesters, than protecting our climate from Hazelwood.
SW Environment Groups await EPA decision on Bluewaters Coal-fired Power Station Expansion
Media Release from Climate Action Bunbury
Monday 7 September 2009
Climate Action Bunbury and other WA climate groups are very concerned that our State Government is deliberately locking us into a dirty coal future with a current proposal before the EPA to expand the Bluewaters power station in Collie and also plans to bring back on line two decommissioned units at the old Muja power station.
Why the climate sceptics are wrong
By Kamala Emanuel 22 August 2009
Family First Senator Steve Fielding returned from a US international climate deniers' conference in June, armed with a shonky graph and some dodgy questions.
Fielding has used these tools of climate scepticism to try to reignite doubt about the science of global warming.
The questions, the answers from climate change minister Penny Wong and her scientific advisors, and the counter-response from Fielding's advisors formed the basis for numerous blog posts and news articles.
Is the methane time bomb about to go off?
By Simon Butler, 22 August 2009
Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases. In the atmosphere it has a warming effect more than 20 times that of carbon dioxide.
Methane escapes into the atmosphere in many ways — rubbish tips, coalmines and cow farts are well-known sources. But the biggest known concentration of the gas is stored in ice-like formations beneath the ocean floor.

CPRS emissions will be higher than baseline till 2035
By David Spratt
Since the CPRS was defeated in the Senate last week, there has been a vigorous debate amongst activists and on a number of grassroots climate e-lists about this event, what it means, whether the decision of the climate action movement to oppose the CPRS as presented was wise, whether we will now get an "even worse" scheme with Liberal support, and whether a better scheme was possible with Green-Labor negotiations.
Perth Voice reports on Billionaires for Coal
The Perth Voice newspaper has reported on the Billionaires for Coal action under the headline "Perth pollution protest lampoons PM".
"Environmental groups held a tongue in cheek protest at Woodside plaza last Tuesday, posing as 'billionaire carbon fuel polluters' in love with the Rudd government's proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS)," reported the paper.
The report was accompanied by a large photo showing a mock Kevin Rudd handing over a cheque for $16.4 billion dollars to some of Australia's largest polluters.
"Billionaires for Coal" support Rudd's emissions trading
Twenty "Billionaires for Coal" and their supporters held a mock rally on the steps of Woodside Plaza at lunch-time today.
Passersby watched as the billionaires rallied in favour of the government's emissions trading scheme, (CPRS) to be debated in the session of federal parliament that opens today.
Speakers Paul Ooter, Avaricious Hogg and Anne T Green, representing the coal industry, emissions-intensive trade exposed industries and Rio Tinto, lined up to pour praise on the government for generous industry subsidies and the lack of a mechanism to reduce greenhouse pollution.
Holding placards declaring "We pollute and you pay! Ha! Ha!" and "Let's just buy another planet", supporters chanted in favour of the scheme.
Kevin Rudd made a guest appearance, bearing an Australian Taxpayer-funded cheque to Australia's biggest polluters for $16.4 billion – the amount of subsidies that will be awarded under the government's emissions trading scheme in its first five years.
Plans to double Collie coal show lack of long-term thinking: Greens
MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE GREENS, Monday 10 August 2009
Moves to more than double the number of coal-fired power stations in Collie within the next four years reveal the utter lack of leadership by the old parties on climate change, the Australian Greens say.
“Within Collie, we’ve got four existing coal-fired power stations including Muja C and D, Collie A and the privately-owned Bluewaters 1. By the end the year, Bluewaters 2 will be running and there are plans to re-open Muja A and B and build Bluewaters 3 and 4 by 2013,” Senator Siewert said.
