Join us outside Woodside Petroleum’s Perth offices, and move with us into the city, to symbolise our call to move beyond fossil fuels and towards renewable energy.

The 2011 Joseph Gentilli Lecture will be given by John McBride, Senior Principal Research Scientist, Bureau of Meteorology, Centre for Atmospheric Weather and Climate Research, Melbourne

It is often stated that the effect of climate change will be felt through its impact on extreme weather events. Australia has recently experienced a number of major extreme events. These include the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Melbourne, the extended heat-waves of 2009, 2010 and 2011, Tropical Cyclone Yasi and the Queensland floods of 2010-2011.How does the frequency of such major events relate to the changing background climate?

The 2011 Reid Oration will be given by Peter Hartley, George and Cynthia Mitchell Chair in Sustainable Development and Environmental Economics, Professor of Economics, James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, Rice University

In this lecture, environmental economist Peter Hartley will discuss the global issues of energy security and climate change and the role of effective policy making to manage the challenges they present.

Peter Hartley is a 2011 Professor-at-Large at the Institute of Advanced Studies, The University of Western Australia and Visiting Professor, UWA Business School. He is President-elect of the US Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) and has been a member of the executive council since 2008.

The national Community Climate Network will be holding its third summit for grassroots climate action groups and activists to share information and coordinate actions to build the community movement for real action on climate change.

The 2011 summit will be held in Melbourne.

Opponents of action on climate change are organising a rally against pricing carbon, this Wednesday, 23rd March. While Safe Climate Perth doesn't have a position on a carbon price, we are encouraging people to attend this counter-demonstration later the same day, to show strong support for real action on climate change. Bring your placcards and banners calling for real action on climate change! renewable energy not fossil fuels and nukes! expanded public transport and an end to deforestation!

Dr Sue Graham-Taylor will introduce the evening and speak about air pollution pressures and the impacts from industrialisation of the region. Then Jane Bremmer and David Munut from Alliance for a Clean Environment (ACE) will give presentations on the air pollution impacts and failings of the Government study in this special presentation on the Kimberley gas hub.
