Australia has recently experienced a number of major extreme events. These include the 2009 Black Saturday fires in Melbourne, the extended heat-waves of 2009, 2010 and 2011, Tropical Cyclone Yasi and the Queensland floods of 2010-2011.How does the frequency of such major events relate to the changing background climate? The 2011 Reid Oration will be given by Peter Hartley, George and Cynthia Mitchell Chair in Sustainable Development and Environmental Economics, Professor of Economics, James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, Rice University In this lecture, environmental economist Peter Hartley will discuss the global issues of energy security and climate change and the role of effective policy making to manage the challenges they present. Peter Hartley is a 2011 Professor-at-Large at the Institute of Advanced Studies, The University of Western Australia and Visiting Professor, UWA Business School. He is President-elect of the US Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) and has been a member of the executive council since 2008. |

Then Jane Bremmer and David Munut from Alliance for a Clean Environment (ACE) will give presentations on the air pollution impacts and failings of the Government study in this special presentation on the Kimberley gas hub. |
